ASTON MARTIN AT GENEVA 2012

2012 marks the fifth anniversary of an independently owned Aston Martin, one of the world’s most acclaimed manufacturers of luxury sports cars. Fittingly, 2012 will also be the year that the new V12 ZAGATO makes its debut as a production car demonstrating that now, more than ever before, Aston Martin is at the forefront of bespoke manufacturing, the new dynamic in the luxury marketplace.

The past twelve months have seen Aston Martin’s global DEALERSHIP NETWORKexpand further into new markets, cementing the brand’s appeal to aficionados of dynamic driving, sporting luxury and bespoke design. China continues to play an important role. Since entering the market in 2008, Aston Martin has opened seven dealerships, with a flagship location in Shanghai’s Pudong district, the largest ever Aston Martin dealership. This year, 13 additional showrooms are due to open in China.  Together they are targeting to increase retail sales in the region from 190 in 2011 to around 700 in 2012.

Aston Martin’s global image is driven by its elegant dealerships, which set the benchmark for automotive retail design. Aston Martin’s global presence is extensive, with 136 dealerships in 42 countries. New markets are continually being added, including South America, India and Turkey.

2012 sees the arrival of the revised V8 VANTAGE range. Enhancements include the introduction of Aston Martin’s acclaimed Seven-speed Sportshift™ II transmission, with a new aerodynamic package derived from the motorsport variants of the Vantage range. In keeping with Aston Martin’s philosophy of continuous improvement, the 2012 Vantage range includes upgrades to chassis and braking.

The VANTAGE RANGE is now topped by the new V12 ZAGATO. Created by a team at the Gaydon studios led by Aston Martin’s Director of Design, Marek Reichman, the V12 Zagato is a celebration of the long-standing collaboration between the two companies, a fitting testament to the importance Aston Martin places on design, technology, craftsmanship and skilled British manufacturing. Just 150 examples will be made at Aston Martin’s GAYDON factory.

Aston Martin continues to derive technological enhancements from both its racing programme and the extensive research and development that has gone into theONE-77 project. In particular, Aston Martin’s experience with carbon-fibre is class leading, and the ability to prepare, fit and finish carbon-fibre components has been carried through into the V12 Zagato and will continue to filter through the Aston Martin range of sports cars.

Dr Ulrich Bez has overseen the company’s modern renaissance since his appointment as Aston Martin’s CEO in July 2000. During that time, Aston Martin has evolved from a small scale manufacturer to global player, preserving and enhancing the Aston Martin name and transforming it into an internationally lauded brand with a positive operating profit since 2005. In 2010 the company reported revenue of £474.3m and adjusted EBITDA of £93.3m. In 2011 Aston Martin retail sales remained stable at 4,200 but a lower adjusted EBITDA is expected due to an increase in the relative cost of sales of more than 3%. Full year 2011 results will be announced in April.

Aston Martin will exhibit eight cars at the 82nd International Motor Show at Geneva’s Palexpo this March, including the European debut of the limited edition V12 Zagato in production form, the V8 VANTAGE S and recently revised V8 Vantage, a DBS COUPE, V12 VANTAGE and RAPIDE.  Also on display are two unique cars prepared by the new bespoke service, Q BY ASTON MARTIN.

AMR CONFIRMS LE MANS & FIA WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMMES

Aston Martin Racing will embark upon an exciting new challenge in 2012 as it prepares to make a return to international GT motorsport in the FIA World Endurance Championship. The team will campaign a V8-powered Vantage in the GTE Pro category of the eight round series, which spans three continents. At the third round of the championship, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Aston Martin Racing will field a second works Vantage GTE.

Aston Martin Owners Club

The Vantage GTE is a development of the Vantage GT2, with significant improvements to all areas including the engine, drivetrain and suspension. Carrying the iconic Gulf colours, the new car will make its competitive debut at round one of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the 60th anniversary edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring, on March 17th. The driver line-up has been confirmed as Darren Turner (GBR), Stefan Mücke (D) and Adrian Fernandez (MX).

Aston Martin Lagonda Chairman David Richards shared his enthusiasm for the new project: “It’s great to be returning to our core motorsport activity; production-based GT racing. It formed the basis for Aston Martin’s return to competition when the DBR9 GT1-racer was launched in 2004, and it was in GT racing that we achieved our famous victories at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008.

“The GT category is also now the most competitive class in world sports car racing and with the new FIA World Endurance Championship the GTE class will, I believe, offer the closest fought and most exciting spectacle. We will see many premium sports car brands competing with great sounding racing cars based on their production models, which all the fans can relate to.”

In order to give the team more competitive experience of the Vantage GTE ahead of Le Mans, Aston Martin Racing will also contest the Long Beach and Laguna Seca rounds of the American Le Mans Series on April 14th and May 12th respectively.

At the heart of the Vantage GTE is the road-going Aston Martin V8 Vantage. The GTE is a significantly updated version of the original GT2 car and has been specifically designed to compete in championships running to the Automobile Club De L’Ouest GTE regulations. Under the bonnet, the engine is based on the standard Aston Martin V8, but with competition components including cylinder heads, connecting rods, valves, camshafts and a racing exhaust system. As in the road car, the transmission is mid-rear mounted, but with a six-speed semi-automatic sequential transmission and competition clutch. The transmission also has a dedicated oil/air cooling system.

The bonded aluminium structure is taken directly from the V8 Vantage road car. Into this, Aston Martin Racing integrates an aerospace specification steel roll cage built to FIA standards. With the exception of the roof, the bodywork is manufactured from lightweight carbon fibre and features an advanced aerodynamic package with carbon fibre splitter, flat floor and diffuser, and a carbon fibre rear wing designed using the latest computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The Vantage GTE retains the road car’s double wishbone suspension layout at the front and rear, but with bespoke wishbones and coil springs over Koni adjustable aluminium bodied dampers. Powerful but lightweight six-piston Brembo racing calipers are fitted to the front axle with similar four-piston calipers at the rear.

Aston Martin Racing’s decision to enter the FIA World Endurance Championship will ensure that the brand continues to compete at the very highest level of endurance sports car racing. As of the 2012 season, all of Aston Martin Racing’s competition cars are based on the road-going Vantage, reflecting its status as the sportiest car in Aston Martin’s model range.

Factory driver Darren Turner said: “I’m excited about this programme as it’s our opportunity to take Aston Martin back to the top of the world of GT racing. The Vantage GTE is a great car; she’s coming along nicely now and we’re ready to take on what we expect will be tough competition. The FIA World Endurance Championship calendar looks good to me, especially as I’ve already won in an Aston Martin at half of the tracks: Sebring, Silverstone, Interlagos and of course at Le Mans. We are going to Sebring next month with a brand new car, but that’s exactly what we did with the DBR9 back in 2005 and we won that race. I’m not promising we can repeat that but we’ll certainly try!”

Team-mate Stefan Mücke explained the team’s ambitions for its first year in the FIA World Endurance Championship: “I’m really looking forward to racing the Vantage GTE and I’m optimistic that the car will be competitive. We always aim high and target podium finishes at every race, but we are also determined to prove the speed and reliability of the Vantage GTE in 2012.”

Adrian Fernandez added: “GT racing will be a new experience for me because I have raced single-seaters and prototypes for the majority of my career. It’s always a pleasure to try something new as a racing driver and with Aston Martin’s past success in the GT category, I’m sure I will learn how to get the most out of the Vantage GTE very quickly. We have a strong driver line-up with my team-mates Stefan and Darren, who have a lot of experience in GT racing. I am excited for the start of the season as well as the opportunity to represent Lowe’s both in a world championship and the American Le Mans Series.”

Aside from a two-car campaign at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Aston Martin will also host the inaugural Aston Martin Racing Festival, which gives all owners of its GT competition cars the opportunity to participate in an exclusive 45-minute race on the 8.5-mile Circuit de la Sarthe on the morning of the 24-hour epic.

20 February 2012, Gaydon: The Aston Martin Vantage range continues to evolve with a comprehensive array of improvements to the V8 VANTAGE aimed at enhancing the dynamic feel, style and competitive pricing of the marque’s entry-level sports car. Aston Martin owners Club

In the most comprehensive programme of enhancements since 2008, the revised 4.7-litre 420bhp (426PS/313kW) entry-level V8 VANTAGE features a raft of improvements first seen in the critically acclaimed VANTAGE S. The standard six-speed manual transmission remains, but the optional six-speed Sportshift™ automated manual transmission has now been replaced with the seven-speed Sportshift™ II. With an additional gear, closer ratios, lower final drive and a quicker, refined shift quality, this new gearbox – designed and manufactured specifically for Aston Martin – provides faster and more precise shifts, optimises acceleration and delivers a sporting driving experience.

Further dynamic enhancements centre on the V8 Vantage’s chassis, which features developments from the Vantage S. Quicker steering, bigger brakes and wider tyres have all been fitted to further enhance the V8 Vantage’s class-leading poise and make it even more responsive and exciting to drive. A new steering column installation, re-valved power-steering pump and a quicker ratio of 15:1 compared to 17:1 on the previous model ensure the new V8 Vantage steers with even greater precision, handles with more agility and provides more feedback for a completely engaging drive.

Stopping power and pedal feel have been significantly increased thanks to new 380mm two-piece ventilated cast-iron front discs and six piston callipers. This new braking system also includes Hill Start Assist (HSA) for more precise control on steep inclines. The V8 Vantage also comes with tyres that are 10mm wider than the outgoing model. Not only does this increased contact area improve the V8 Vantage’s already prodigious levels of road-holding, but it allows the more responsive steering and stronger brakes to be fully exploited.

To reflect its enhanced performance the V8 Vantage has received a number of styling changes inspired by the Vantage S and N400 limited edition. At the front a lower   bumper – complete with aerodynamic splitter – houses a larger air intake that feeds the engine and front brakes. At the rear a diffuser creates added drama and function, while sculpted race-derived side sills complete the V8 Vantage’s more muscular look.

These technical and styling changes have been applied to both the V8 VANTAGE COUPE and ROADSTER models, with prices starting from RRP £84,995 / €108,500 (Germany).

The RRP £99,995 / €128,500 (Germany) Vantage S remains the most generously equipped, highest performing and most driver-focussed V8-engined model in the range. Developing 430bhp (436PS/321kW) at 7300rpm and 490Nm (361lb ft) of torque at 5000rpm the Vantage S’s more potent state of engine tune perfectly complements the Sportshift™ II close-ratio seven speed automated manual transmission, which is fitted as standard. A sports exhaust system unique to the ‘S’ further emphasises its sporting credentials, delivering a rousing soundtrack, totally in keeping with the intensity of the driving experience.

Carbon fibre detailing of the Vantage S’s motorsport-derived aerodynamic package makes a discreet and highly appealing visual distinction from the V8 Vantage, while inside the ‘S’ variant features a sumptuously trimmed interior that demonstrates Aston Martin’s unique ability to combine the craftsmanship of traditional hand-stitched leather upholstery with striking modern design. The company’s fully integrated satellite navigation system developed in conjunction with Garmin is now fitted as standard along with Bluetooth and cruise control.

Production of the sensational V12 VANTAGE continues unchanged; this acclaimed model delivering its unrivalled blend of extreme performance, exclusivity and practicality in one unique package. Powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque, this remarkable evolution of the Vantage has a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 kp/h) time of 4.2 seconds while its uniquely thrilling character distinguishes it from the rest of the range.

Later this year the Vantage range will be joined by the exotic V12 Zagato, created in 2011 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic DB4GT ZAGATO. A prototype V12 Zagato caused a sensation by winning the prestigious Villa D’Este concours and competing in the Nürburgring 24-hour race. Now, less than 12-months after its dramatic debut, the V12 Zagato – employing a unique blend of bespoke Italian design, hand-built craftsmanship and advanced technology – is poised to enter strictly limited production, with first deliveries to commence later this year.

Racing is in Aston Martin’s DNA and the Vantage is at the forefront of Aston Martin’s motorsport activity. The Vantage first went racing in 2006, when Aston Martin’s CEO Dr Ulrich Bez and members of the company’s engineering department took a near-standard V8 Vantage to the gruelling Nürburgring 24 hour race. Since then GT4 versions of the V8 Vantage have become a force to be reckoned with, spawning one-make race series and winning their class in Dubai, Nürburgring, Silverstone and Spa 24-hour races. For 2012 Aston Martin Racing is stepping up a gear with the new V12 Vantage focused race car. Currently undergoing an extensive test programme this spectacular new racing car will be in action throughout the 2012 season.

ASTON MARTIN VICTORIOUS AT “THE WHITE RING” SKI-RACE IN LECH AUSTRIA

Aston Martin Owners Club

Lech, Arlberg, 15 January 2012. Aston Martin, a sports car manufacturer with a long standing successful tradition in motorsports, sets the same tone on the winter race slopes: At this year’s ski race “The White Ring”, which took place this past weekend for the seventh time in Lech Zürs at Arlberg in Austria, the British sports car maker took an overall victory in the men’s competition. Further Aston Martin achieved two class wins as well as a third place. Aston Martin was present with two teams, comprised of both customer and fans of the luxury brand.

Team leader was Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez himself. As an enthusiastic amateur skier, this was his fourth time at the start. This year he invited to race alongside him as part of the Aston Martin Team racing legend Marc Girardelli, the former Austrian World Cup champion and winner of the race at Arlberg last year Josef “Pepi” Strobl together with ex-pro Jürgen Grabher.

In freezing temperatures of minus 20 degrees in bright morning sunshine, the 1,000 entrants started the race in picturesque winter scenery promptly at 9 o’clock, covering a distance stretching over 22 kilometers of slopes and 5,500m altitude.

After 46.03,62 minutes Josef “Pepi” Strobl with the bib number 10001 of Team Aston Martin Differences 1 once again proved fastest to the finish line and was able to reconfirm last year’s victory as the fastest man on the White Ring. He also won the individual championship in the class B for men. Team mate Marc Girardelli (bib number 10004) won the individual rating of class C men who needed just 46.38,58 minutes to cover the distance. On the third place in class C, Jürgen Grabher (bib number 43) followed in a time of 47.5526 minutes.

“Many of our customers are not only racing, but also winter sport fans. Therefore, we take advantage of opportunities like this to step beyond familiar motorsport race tracks like the Nürburgring or Le Mans to also be present at other competitive events,” said team leader Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez. “The White Ring is such an event, where we are pleased to join with our customers and friends of the brand in an active family atmosphere. This corresponds to the values of Aston Martin.”

“We are delighted on our successes this year. I congratulate Pepi Strobl, Marc Girardelli and Jürgen Grabher who took great results and thank them as well as all our team mates for entering the race on behalf of Aston Martin, and showing a great sportive spirit,” said Ulrich Bez. “We look forward to the racing again next year.”

AUTO TROPHY 2011: THIRD VICTORY IN A ROW FOR THE ASTON MARTIN RAPIDE

Frankfurt / Düsseldorf, 22. November 2011. Aston Martin has reasserted itself at this year’s Auto Trophy vote of the German motoring magazine Auto Zeitung as the most popular foreign sports car brand. The readers of Auto Zeitung voted Aston Martin five times onto the podium: The Aston Martin Rapide finished first in its category, taking an Auto Trophy 2011 home. A second place went to both the Aston Martin DBS and the Aston Martin Virage, as well as a third place to not only the Aston Martin V8 Vantage alone but also the DB9 Volante.

“We are delighted that the readers of Auto Zeitung have met Aston Martin with great enthusiasm for many years and continually choose our sports cars to return to the top,” said Dr. Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin chief executive, at the Auto Trophy Gala on Tuesday evening in Düsseldorf. “The combination of powerful performance and elegant design at Aston Martin results in an emotionality that is unparalleled and makes our sports cars special and desirable products. Not without reason, Aston Martin was re-elected as this year’s Coolest Brand.”>

In the category of Luxury class Import the Aston Martin Rapide triumphed with 30.7 percent of the readers’ votes for the third consecutive year with an impressive lead over the runner-up. In the category of Sports cars Import the Aston Martin Virage achieved 15% of the votes, behind by only a smidge to the winner, landing in a narrow second place. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage received 10.1 percent of the readers’ votes securing the bronze medal in this category. In consideration of all of these votes, more than a quarter of the readers voted for Aston Martin alone.
Another third place was reserved for the Aston Martin DB9 Volante in the assigned rating of Convertibles over 30.000 € Import. The convertible received 9.2 percent of the readers’ votes. In the category Super sports cars Import, the readers of Auto Zeitung voted the DBS into second place.

The Auto Trophy vote of the Auto Zeitung magazine was held for the 24th time this year. A total of nearly 98 000 readers participated, whom were asked to choose their favorites from nearly 400 vehicle models in 29 categories

ASTON MARTIN RACING BEGINS TESTING THE V12 VANTAGE GT3

Aston Martin Racing began testing its new V12 Vantage GT3 at Brands Hatch in Kent this week, covering almost 1000 kilometres in just two days. The majority of the mileage was conducted by factory driver Darren Turner.

After two days behind the wheel, Turner said: “The car ran like clockwork throughout and we’ve managed really good mileage already. The feeling of the V12 Vantage GT3 is a massive step forward from the DBRS9. Being based on the smaller Vantage it is more responsive and feels more nimble, giving the driver plenty of confidence to extract all the performance from the V12 engine while also being light on its tyres. It isn’t too physical to drive and I didn’t even break into a sweat during the test!

“With the clean styling and the amazing sounding V12, it’s closer to the core values of Aston Martin’s road cars than any of the racing cars we’ve ever built. I’m certain it’ll become a favourite among motorsport fans in no time at all.”

The design and engineering of the new V12 GT3 endurance racer has been led by Aston Martin Racing’s Chief Engineer for GT, Dan Sayers. The team is now embarking upon a rigorous development and sign off programme, which involves extended testing of the car at competition speeds to ensure the longevity of all critical components.

The V12 Vantage GT3 is a direct replacement for the Aston Martin DBRS9, which first competed in 2006 and went on to score many race and championship wins including the 2007 British GT Championship and the 2009 FIA GT3 Teams’ Championship. Sharing Aston Martin’s renowned bonded aluminium VH body structure and 6.0-litre V12 engine with the road-going V12 Vantage, the new racer is the culmination of six years’ experience competing at the forefront of all major international GT series.

Aston Martin returned to GT racing as a factory team in 2005 with the DBR9 GT1, which went on to record back-to-back victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007 and 2008, as well as winning this year’s FIA GT1 World Championship.
John Gaw, Aston Martin Racing Managing Director, said: “The testing of the new V12 Vantage GT3 has gone really well. We haven’t had any significant issues with the car, despite having covered close to 1000 kilometres, exceeding all our expectations in the car’s first track test. “The Vantage GT3 is the ultimate expression of all the experience that Aston Martin Racing has gained in the past six years. The DBRS9 still has a year of FIA homologation remaining, which effectively makes 2012 a development year for the V12 Vantage GT3.”

It uses a significantly revised version of the DBRS9’s 6.0-litre V12 engine. Changes include a lightweight crankshaft, dry sump lubrication and new valve trains for even greater performance and reliability.

“We’re very confident that the Vantage GT3 will be a competitive force in all GT3 series, winning races and eventually titles as well. Given our track record in engineering and building fast and reliable GT cars, we’re very confident that the new Vantage GT3 will build on the DBRS9’s success over years to come,” added Gaw.

The V12 Vantage GT3 will be eligible to run in all FIA GT3 and national GT3 championships; the Blancpain Endurance Series; VLN and the Nurburgring 24 Hour endurance race.

The 600bhp engine – positioned behind the front axle line for optimum weight distribution – powers the rear wheels via a carbon fibre propshaft, an Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission and limited slip differential.

Braking is by six pot calipers at the front and four pot items at the rear, with ventilated discs all round and manually adjustable brake bias. The suspension is double wishbone type with uniball bearings and two-way adjustable dampers front and rear.

Aston Martin Racing will continue with the V12 Vantage GT3’s comprehensive testing programme into the New Year and beyond.
